A United Nations resolution, tabled by the Canadian Government, calling attention to the serious human rights situation in Iran was welcomed today by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Canada, the Bahá’í national governing council.
Speaking on behalf of Canada’s 30,000 Bahá’ís, Karen McKye, the Secretary-General of the Bahá’ís of Canada, said, “We are grateful to see that our government continues to defend the rights of Bahá’ís in Iran at the United Nations. For over twenty-five years, our government has been consistent in its efforts to keep the plight of the Bahá’ís in front of the international community.”
For the past four years, Canada has taken the lead at the UN by tabling strong resolutions against Iran, which have been passed by a vote of the majority of the world’s countries. The resolution this year notes in detail the serious violations of human rights endured by the Bahá’í community, Iran’s largest religious minority.
